After months of planning and multiple interviews with President Bush, his beaming daughter Jenna, 26 finally commemorated the union with Henry Hagar, 30, with a lovely Texas celebration. In order to avoid swarms of press and publicity, the couple opted for a quiet celebration at the President’s Crawford estate suited for a large tent wedding and picturesque outdoor ceremony.
When asked by People Magazine about the wedding, President Bush had nothing but wonderful things to say about his first daughter’s wedding. He said “it was awfully special” and very emotional. “Our little girl, Jenna, married a really good guy,” the President stated to reporters as he was boarding Air Force One with the first lady and his parents. The first family was heading back to Washington, D.C. following the wedding as Jenna and Hagar departed the country for their much-anticipated honeymoon.
The wedding was highly guarded and followed a more natural wedding scheme. Jenna was adamant about staying away from a black-tie affair, and wore a couture figure-hugging gown that was covered in antique lace. The pair planned the ceremony perfectly so that they could exchange vows just as the sun was setting. The ceremony walkway was headed off by a limestone cross where the minister stood with the rest of the bridal party. Jenna made her descent down the aisle on the arm a teary President Bush, who looked more elated than usual during the festivities.
President Bush joked that he had an entire speech prepared but the minister and his daughter made him reduce it to fit in the ceremony. “It was supposed to be 40 minutes but they cut me back to 20,” he jokingly responded to reporters. “The wedding was spectacular. It’s just – it’s all we could have hoped for. The weather cooperated nicely; just as the vows were exchanged the sun set over our lake and it was just a special day and a wonderful day and we’re mighty blessed.”
During the father-daughter dance, Jenna and President Bush waltzed to “You Are So Beautiful,” by Joe Cocker, played by a live band. Many onlookers watched as the President boogied to various tunes throughout the night. “He was right there. He got down. He got down!” One attendant said with surprise.
