Jenna Hagar, the daughter of Republican President, George W. Bush, just married Henry Chase Hagar on the family ranch in Texas on May 10th. With the wedding event still fresh in her mind, the new Mrs. Hagar is eager to share advice on the nuptials to just about anybody – including Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi who are looking to tie the knot in the next few months.
Publicly, Jenna is a Republican just like her family, but even she can’t help but admire the determination both DeGeneres and de Rossi have to finally legalize their long-term relationship. Jenna and the First Lady were invited to appear on the Ellen DeGeneres show, and they went bearing big smiles and gifts. Jenna also brought some pictures of the wedding to share some of the finest moments of her special day with the American public.
Both DeGeneres and Jenna agreed that the most ideal place for a celebrity to get married is somewhere far from the prying eyes and ears of the media. “It’s a good idea to do it somewhere private because, to us, it was a really special day to be with family,” Jenna stated. It was at this point that DeGeneres asked for permission to use the Bush’ family ranch for her own wedding celebration.
“It looked like nobody could fly over and get pictures or bother you, really,” DeGeneres says with genuine interest. “So can we borrow it for our wedding, can we get the ranch?” Jenna played along by assuring her that the ranch was all hers. Jenna also advised that de Rossi and DeGeneres should keep the guest list to a minimum. Her reasoning - “I definitely didn’t want to introduce myself to someone at my own wedding.”
Just a few days earlier, DeGeneres battled over the topic of same-sex marriages with McCain, a fierce advocate of the Republican Party and strongly opposed to the legalization of gay unions. McCain believes that gay couples should be given the benefits of insurance and taxes but should leave “the unique status of marriage between a woman and a man.”
DeGeneres protested by saying, “We are all the same people, all of us. You’re no different than I am. Our love is the same. When someone says, ‘You can have a contract, and you’ll still have insurance, and you get all that, ‘it sounds to me like they’re saying, ‘Well, you can sit there, you just can’t sit there.”
Although the two couldn’t come to an agreement on the matter, McCain still wished DeGeneres all the happiness and admitted that she articulates her position in a very eloquent fashion. To which, DeGeneres responded, “So, you’ll walk me down the aisle. Is that what you’re saying?” McCain could only laugh at her wide-eyed quip.
