How to have an eco-friendly wedding day
By Georgina Clatworthy
If you are a lover of the great outdoors, care about the environment & protecting the earth's resources, then a wedding with a eco-friendly theme is perfect for you.
WHAT TO WEAR: Choose comfortable clothing with a natural feel. Your attendants don't need to match, just ask them to wear something they are comfortable in & in keeping with your attire. As it is an eco-friendly wedding you should focus on natural fabrics such as cotton, linen or silk & try to choose clothes that have been made under the Fair Trade scheme.
FLOWERS: Go for wildflowers, daisies or garden flowers. Make your bouquet a hand-tied arrangement of these flowers & make simple button holes with just a single flower. Try to create a look that says you have just picked these yourself. Order them from a local supplier or grower & make sure they haven't traveled along way to reach you.
SETTING: The perfect setting would be in a natural location such as woodland or open ground somewhere. Botanical gardens, parks or nature reserves are all perfect choices. If you have a particular location in mind, you maybe able to get a permit to hold your wedding there from the Parks Department. Be mindful though of the rules about fires, litter & guest numbers.
FAVORS: Give your guests flowers, pot plants or seeds as favors. Bird houses or feeders also make great favors or even just a bag of bird seed so they can feed the local or garden birds.
MENU: You should serve organic food & wine, preferably from the local area or at the very least food which hasn't traveled a lot of food miles. Choose dishes which will compliment your surroundings such as fish, salads or vegetarian dishes.
REGISTRY: If you love the outdoor life then ask for camping or leisure equipment. Alternatively ask them to make donations to a chosen charity.
INVITATIONS: Create beautiful invitations from recycled papers & pressed flowers.
SPECIAL TOUCH: A lovely touch would be to plant a tree as a symbol of your unity. After your wedding you could return to plant more trees for your anniversary & for the birth of your children. Eventually you will have planted enough trees to create your own family woodland!
