Music comprises for more than half of the overall ambiance of any wedding celebration. It's very important to find a band or DJ that can entertain as well as provide pleasing and popular tunes. Before venturing out into the euphonious world of musicians, you should sit down with your partner and discuss all of the audio aspects of your event. You need to figure out what wedding music you want to walk down the aisle to, and what you want played in the background while they eat appetizers and wait to be seated in the reception hall. The latter may seem like a small detail, but it's crucial that you convey a theme in the wedding music, otherwise the entire visage will fall apart.
Getting a better sense of music that you and your partner enjoy, and defining that in a more specific sense will help you in your quest. If you or your partner like heavy rock and roll music but you're having an uptown wedding, you may have to steer off the beaten path a little bit. You want your guests to enjoy the wedding music as much as you, but you want to accommodate more to yourself first and foremost. If this means throwing a song in here and there that you favor, then you should do so. Once your guests see you and your new husband/wife enjoying themselves, they'll definitely want to join in!
Knowing what you like and what you want to listen to is half the battle. If you and your partner decide that jazz music is what you want to incorporate in the reception festivities, then the task is finding a great band that will be able to do this effectively. If you want someone to play a mix of your eighties favorites, the it would probably be better to put a list together and take it to a local DJ.
Deciding between hiring a live band verses a DJ can be tough. There are positives and negatives to either choice. A live band will add more dynamism to your wedding atmosphere, but they will need more room, and will need to take occasional breaks during their performance. They also cost much more than a DJ, and so if you're concerned about cost, this probably wouldn't be a very good choice. A DJ has the ability to play any and all songs that you like and can deliver almost any tune on request.
Make sure that you coordinate the size of the wedding party with the choice in music. If you're having a smaller wedding, then don't go with a huge band as they may overwhelm the group. Conversely, if you're having a wedding with more than two-hundred wedding guests, don't hire a sole guitarist and piano player. They'll be eaten alive and completely drowned out by the crowd!
If you've attended weddings or events recently and remember the band or DJ being fantastic, hunt them down and get their number! It's much easier to go about attaining information on musicians this way than it is going door to door and asking them what they offer. Seeing someone perform live is the only way to judge their talent. Hearing that they are able to cover some of your ideal songs won't mean anything if they play a terrible rendition! Word-of-mouth recommendations can also be very helpful. Ask your friends and family for suggestions and see if they know of anyone who they really enjoyed.
DJ's and bands do more than just play the music; they help host the entire party. When it's time to cut the cake or start the money dance, they will be the ones making these announcements and coaxing your guests to the dance floor. You want someone with some authority and stage presence but who carries it off in a non-obnoxious way.
The flow of the reception is ultimately in his/her hands. You don't want to hire someone who has never really hosted a wedding celebration, because the run-through will be choppy and feel awkward.
In the end, you somebody who can manage to get everyone out on the dance floor at some point in the evening, even your great-grandparents! That would be a musical success in which all of your guests would hope to aspire. Finding the right DJ and band that will be able to pull this off will be a difficult task, but it's entirely worth the effort.
