The lifting of the wedding veil reminds one of unwrapping a gift. The bride walks down the aisle, her face and body relatively hidden under layers of embroidered gauze. At the front of the procession, her face is is revealed as the veil is raised, and is thus presented to the waiting groom. This age-old custom seems to be fading quickly into obscurity by confident brides who don't want to be hidden from the guest's gaze and the wedding photographer. You want everyone to be focused on you; and you paid enough for the make-up so you may as well get your use out of it!
Why uphold the age old tradition of the wedding veil? There is a mass amount of symbolism in the veil which has persisted throughout various cultures since the beginning of time. More than just a protective cover from the sun, it holds significant meaning that transcends most religions and is utilized by each one in different ways.
In Christianity the veil was thought of as an object that was used to shield the most divine things from the eyes of unholy men. In many religions, it is dictated that women should not pray with their heads exposed, for to do so was shameful. This rule is an indication that women belong to man, while man belongs to God. Although this principle in today's world seems highly sexist, the wearing of the wedding veil does not necessarily imply a negative denotation. The union of you and your partner does signify that you belong to him and him to you.
For those who are religiously-minded you will probably feel obligated to wear a wedding veil. There is no need to feel dejected about this decision; veils add much more to the wedding ensemble than it takes away. There are many types of veils that are constructed in assorted fabrics and can be customized to your wedding gown.
There are some veils that if made in the right color and material, will allow your face to be detected under the dazzling sun and flashing camera bulbs. Shimmer veils hang differently than normal veils and sparkle in photos. Silk veils are also very nice and come in various colors. Doing some research for the type of wedding veil you have in mind is very important. Sometimes the cost of wedding veils can exceed your finances, so you want to contact more than one bridal store and see their options.
For a more formal wedding look, the blusher veil would be the best choice. The blusher adds a very chic look and is ideal for the modern bride. Veils that hang to the chin allows for the rest of your dress to be exposed and still makes for a very dramatic statement. You can have this blusher adorned with beads or floral floating appliqués that perfectly coordinate with your wedding dress. Compliment a cropped birdcage veil with hanging diamond earrings.
If you're wearing a more colloquial wedding gown think about pairing this with a fly-away veil. The fly-away looks best with ankle-length and exquisite form-fitting dresses. The effect is wispy and playful and will complete the more casual bride's overall appearance. If you're dress is even shorter than this and falls around the knee area, an A-line elbow-length veil would work very well. This style veil frames the face beautifully. It's a little untraditional, but balances the overall visage between the informality of the wedding dress so that the bride still imparts that princess aura.
The most diverse head accent is the fingertip veil. Due to the length, this looks the best with ball-gowns and more formal wedding dresses, but can still be utilized with a more casual style and day-time affairs. The fingertip cascades down the back and reaches the hands of the bride; creating a very striking vision. You could even combine this type of veil with a blusher so that it drapes down the bride's back but doesn't cover the front of the dress.
If you want something extremely extravagant then go with a chapel veil. This hangs all the way to the floor, falling seven feet from the top of the head to the ground. You could choose one that has binary layers or combine it with a blusher or a fingertip veil. This way you won't have to worry about it getting in the way as you try to walk gracefully down the aisle. This veil wonderfully transforms mermaid-style and A-line skirts. It will add body and character to your long draping ball-gown. With this veil you'll be the most refined bride anyone has ever seen.
