The other day, my sister and her boyfriend were in a bookshop picking out some new texts for one of her classes. While there, the two of them witnessed a couple marrying in the lobby, the location that the two had first met.
It is the perfect illustration of how literally anywhere can become a wedding venue, and one that offers a cheap alternative to the massive halls rents for tens of thousands a night. Especially as the location is the most expensive part of hosting any wedding.
Lately, I have been seeing more stories about people getting married in Taco Bells or tiny, unknown churches. But there are any number of options, as it is all a matter of your creativity.
Museums, Zoos and Galleries
You might not think of a your local museum of natural history as a place to get hitched. But you would be surprised about how often these non-profits have wedding packages. A friend of mine is planning a wedding at a tiny art gallery downtown, where she and her future wife will say their vows surrounded by a tableau of contemporary art.
Parks, Big and Small
My husband and I met in a little park almost ten years ago. If we ever renew our vows, we plan on doing it there, under the huge trees we once sat beneath and flirted. It is a very significant location for the both of us.
An aunt of mine did the same, only a large park on the outskirts of town, where they have gorgeous arches and natural scenery. It cost her half of what she would have spent anywhere else, even with the rental of the reception hall on the same premises.
I have also seen many people going for national and state parks, which offer a breathtaking view while being very cheap, and sometimes free.
Local Spots
Is there a little theater somewhere nearby that you and your fiance maybe go to? Or a cafe that you had your first date? A restaurant or bar? These local businesses will often be thrilled to handle your wedding or reception, and for a modest fee. You might as well try.
