Catholic Wedding Vows

Catholics refer to marriage as “holy matrimony.” According to the Catholic beliefs, two people who join together are not doing it just for the sake of uniting for all eternity, but also in order to spread the word of the Church to the rest of the world. Marriage is a form of prayer to God, that he would bless their future and bestow his grace and happiness upon them.

Even though the Catholic ceremony traditions dictate a very specific procedure, some churches will allow the bride and groom to integrate personalized aspects into the wedding vows as they see fit. The three rites that can not be altered are the: nuptials, solemn promise, and exchange of the rings. Below are a couple examples of some simple and highly traditional wedding vows with which you can use to create your own Catholic-focused wedding vows.

Catholic Wedding Example - 1

Groom: In the name of God, I (name) take you (name) to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow.

Bride: In the name of God, I (name) take you (name) to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow.

Catholic Wedding Example - 2

Father,
you have made the bond of marriage a holy mystery,
a symbol of Christ's love for his church.
Hear our prayers for [ name ] and [ name ]
With faith in you and in each other
they pledge their love today.
May their lives always bear witness
to the reality of that love.
We ask you this
through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
