Where to begin? Finding the Right Wedding Vow

Sometimes a couple doesn't have the time to think of the perfect vows, or is simply afraid to say something heartfelt for fear of breaking down in front of a hundred guests. This is perfectly understandable. The best solution for this situation is to substitute the wedding vow with a borrowed love stanza or Biblical excerpt.

Almost every church has their own rules and regulations when it comes to acceptable pledges. Before you start to devise your personal vows to one another, you should first consult the bishop or pastor of your church and see if they have any recommendations on the matter. Some religious institutions even forbid the use of subjective vows, so double check with them beforehand.

Next comes figuring out what kind of wedding vow suits you best. There are a few choices per each religious faction, and hundreds of love poems you could employ. Writers have been capturing the inner workings of the soul for thousands of years, all the way back to the Old testament. The Bible is always a popular resource for brides as it encompasses love on the most spiritual and intimate level possible. What is better than:

“Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” ~ Corinthians 13:8

Finding the right vow is like finding the perfect mate: it takes time, inspiration, and in many cases, hard work. If you're a fairly religious couple, there's no better way to affirm your new union than with a Biblical citation. Although this is one of the most commonly used passages, there are so many thoughts and ideals in regard to love, you could easily find something less known and just as equivalent in beauty.

Another idea is to turn to some of the more poetic works. Adopt a quote from your favorite book that mirrors your own beliefs in love, and use this as a stepping stone for your wedding vows. This will help give your speech some direction and keep your mind focused. For example, you could begin your speech by saying:

“A famous philosopher once said: 'Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but looking outward in the same direction.'”

You could use this quote as your opening statement, then go on to describe how your love for one another was the motivation behind the decision to start a new family. Explain how his/her love for you has encouraged you to become a person you've always wanted to be; a person greater than you ever thought possible. That although you both have an unconditional relationship, you don't spend your days unproductively reveling in your love; you instead use those affections to strive ahead, inspiring change and hope in one another.

These are just some helpful tips for those couples who are trying to find the right words to say. It's all right to borrow some thoughts on the matter of love, but try to use them sparingly. The only person who can tell you what love is, is you. Love is different for every person and should be treated as such. Take a stanza or two and personalize it however you please!
