Planning Ahead

One mistake many couples make is attempting to write the wedding vows the week, or even the day before the actual wedding. Although some may be able to put something earnest and meaningful together in a few minutes, others will be wrought with anxiety over the task of trying to find the right words. You could end up spending endless hours pacing the room, locked in a mental struggle over the manner of your feelings and your desires as they pertain to the future. One day just isn't enough time to work through all of the deep and complicated things that are going on in your mind and heart. The wedding vows should be something that you should start to think a couple months after the wedding date is set. Give yourself plenty of time to brainstorm, write a couple drafts, retrieve a few opinions, and practice the final copy.

Over the course of the wedding preparation months, you'll have the opportunity to modify and perfect the wedding vows. You may have even left out a few things in the initial draft. By planning ahead, you'll give yourself the luxury of incorporating changes into the speech in an unstrained matter of time.

Brainstorming can be a tedious process – it could be weeks before you write something you really like.

By putting aside time to prepare your vows, you'll be happier and more at ease on the day of your wedding than you would be otherwise. Sit down with your partner and talk about your wedding vows, (without giving too much away!) about what you hope to expect, how long you think the vows should be, and things about the relationship you love the most. This way you'll both be on the same page and will have time to amend your pledges months prior to the actual ceremony.
